Portrait Workshop, Sunday, February 24, 2019

*** The workshop has been cancelled due to the weather ***

Sunday 24th. February is our annual indoor studio type portrait seminar and shoot, 7:30 PM at our usual auditorium at the Museum of Natural History, Summer St. Halifax.

AGENDA : A talk on the technique of bounce flash, the lens, studio portrait lighting, and posing the model. All this will be followed by a free for all shoot. I hope to have three stations set up with studio lights etc.

Bring your cameras and any other lighting equipment and reflectors that you may have. You can also bring in your own models.

After all is done I would appreciate it if you were to provide JPEGs of your shoot which I can give to the models as a thank you. My models have agreed to pose for us at no cost to us or the club. I think we owe them . If these photos were to be brought in to me on a Jump drive I shall transfer them to the computer , sort them , then get them to my model friends pronto.

Also please provide photos that are at least 1400 x 1050 or larger, in the past I have received photos that were so poorly sized that it was just a number of pixels on the screen and I had to discard them.

Also please don’t print your name etc across the photo. One set of photos I got a few years ago had the maker’s name printed across the face—go figure. These models for coming in so you can practise your art at no cost. I have seen photos used in competitions that have done quite well indeed.

Happy shooting—see you on Sunday.

Seminar 7, Sunday, February 3, 2019

It’s the middle of winter, it’s cold and dark outside in the evenings – so I am hoping you have booked your time for the upcoming Post Processing Seminar. It’ll be at 7:30 pm on February 3 at the usual place, the Museum of Natural History. There will be two seminars:

Landscape Focus Stacking (15 minutes) – Darryl Robertson
What it is, why you should use it, when to use it and how to do it. Quick, easy and amazing!

Post Processing / Introduction to ON1 Photo RAW – Laszlo Podor
This time we’ll review a relatively new product, that is very powerful tool and a good substitute for Photoshop and Lightroom on both Mac and Windows computers. ON1 Photo RAW 2019 is the third version of Photo RAW – ON1 started developing plugins several years ago and replaced their Perfect Photo 10 plugin suit with ON1 Photo RAW in 2017.  The recent versions of their product can be used as plugins from Photoshop and Lightroom, but it can be used as a standalone product, as a replacement for Lightroom/PS combo. There are lots of features of their product, so we’ll be cherry picking and look at some of the features that are useful for any photographer.

  • ON1 browser / user interface
  • Develop Module
  • Effects
  • Layers
  • Adjustments – local and global
  • Masking – luminosity masks and more
  • From RAW to finished image

The previous years’ similar seminars were workshop type seminars, this time, since it’s an introduction to a new (new to most of us) tool, it’ll be a regular seminar. But if you wish, you can bring your laptop or tablet and follow the presentation.
If you have any questions or if you would like to see some specific features of ON1 Photo RAW, please let me know. You can e-mail me or we can discuss some of the questions after one of the next meetings.

To download the trial version of the product, go to the following page: https://www.on1.com/products/photo-raw/download/
If you would like to purchase ON1 Photo RAW you can get some discounts: 20% – use CANONRUMORS as coupon code – valid until February 15.15% – if you are an individual member of CAPA. See the code on CAPA Members only page.10% – PSA individual members receive 10% discount on ON1 products. Unfortunately you can use only one of the coupons…

Happy shooting, Laszlo
