2017-2018 Program

The new 2017-2018 program for the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia is being finalized now. The events, meetings and field trips for September through December have been posted in the Google calendar in the website schedule page.

There will be no printed program this year. Instead, as a cost saving measure, the Google calendar on the website will be updated as new events are added to the program or changes to the events are made.

You can download an ics file that you can use to import the program into your own PC or Mac calendars. This file will be updated as needed. The schedule web page also has instructions on how to print out the events directly from the Google calendar if you want a printed list of events.

External Trophies and Themes:

NS Bird Society Trophy
In past years the NS Bird Society limited the birds eligible for the trophy to species that had not won the trophy in the past 5 years. That limitation has been removed. Any bird species photographed in Nova Scotia is eligible this year.

NS Nature Trust Trophy
The theme for the NSNT is “Wildlife”. Images must be shot in Nova Scotia and can include mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. The subject species must currently exist in the wild in Nova Scotia, e.g. an image of a blue parakeet escaped from the pet store is not eligible.

RK Mann Trophy
“The earth has music for those that listen.” (George Santayana)

Mayor of Halifax Trophy
“Halifax Public Gardens”

Canada 150
The Canada 150 theme replaces the treasure hunt this season. It will be a Show & Tell (non-competitive) on October 22, 2017. Up to 5 images in competition format. All images must have been taken in Canada. This is a very open theme, but as a guidepost consider “what Canada means to me”.

Guild Assignment 1: Curves  (photographed after May 1, 2017) Upload by September 24, 2017.
Guild Assignment 2: Cemeteries  (photographed after September 1, 2017) Upload by January 14, 2018.

SILENT ESSAY: Upload by October 22, 2017.
This year it is even easier to enter the silent essay competition. You do not need any special software to create your essay.

A silent essay consists of up to 12 images which develop a story, theme or idea. There are strict rules for how the images form the essay. Each image must be in competition format. The essay will display each image, in order, for 6 seconds with a 1 second dissolve transition between images. No exceptions.

Because the rules for a silent essay are defined and are the same for everyone, all you have to do to enter the competition is to upload your images, properly named and numbered, just like any other competition. You do not produce the essay file yourself! That will be done for you. More information will be provided once we get a bit closer to the competition date.

Photographer of the Year 2015-16 (POY)

‘Hello and Thankyou’ to everyone who made it out to the POY night on the 16th. ?
To those of you who couldn’t make it, “We missed you!”
Enjoy the collage of photos from the interactive part of the evening.
I want to thank specifically the Guild Executive, led by Dean Hirtle, for their efforts to create a wonderful atmosphere for us all to learn and share the things we love most about Photography and image making.
Special thanks to Fred and Edie for providing a lovely lunch and to Maria and Laszlo for helping with the setup. Also to Merv for setting up the projector, and bringing background music (He suggested a Karaoke night but the offer has been declined ! ?).
Thank you Darryl, for the technical assistance, and many thanks as well to Pam, Terry, and Joyce, for the packing and lugging when it was over. Oh and thanks to my husband Gary, for his continued support of my endeavors…

All the best to my fellow Guild Members and Friends,
