Timelapse Imagery

A time-lapse video essentially compresses time into a smaller space, creating some exceptional and evocative results.

In theory, time-lapse videos are easy to create – after all, you simply take a few hundred photos, one after another, line them up in a video application and you are done. Not true, if you want to create a stunning, seamless, flicker-free time-lapse video. There is a lot more involved than setting up a camera and capturing the sequence.

With digital cameras, we have infinite possibilities to capture time-lapse sequences and create exceptional video with even the simplest digital point-and-shoot cameras to DSLRs. This session will provide the basics necessary to create time-lapse videos.

We will cover the following topics:
Equipment

Camera settings

Intervalometer settings

Settings based on the speed of activity

Creating a quick video using Lightroom

Creating a video using LR Timelapse

Bio:
Through his images he wants to share with you the magic, his emotions, and his experiences from the moment he presses the camera’s shutter.

As much as Shiv enjoys the process of image capture, from stills to motion, he equally enjoys the post-process. The software and tools he uses, vary by image and subject matter, but he strongly believes that these techniques are represented as an integral part of his creation.

Shiv believes that his work, whether it be creatures, scapes, or still life, is most successful when it exudes the beauty and richness of life. To Shiv, a successful image is a personal opinion, what is more relevant than the subjective quality of an image, is how personally compelling that image is and the emotions it triggers in the viewer.

Shiv devotes a great deal of his time formally reviewing photography-related products, to education in digital photography and he is a speaker and competition judge. Shiv leads photo tours and workshops worldwide, typically one tour a month.

His book Time-Lapse Imagery was published in February 2014.

Shiv belongs to multiple photographic clubs and associations and serves as President of the New England Camera Club Council and Vice Chair of the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists. He is the immediate past Vice President of Learning and Technology of the Photographic Society of America. Additionally he is a member of the Professional Photographers Association of America; past Board Member, General Chairman of the PSA International, and Chairman of the Nature Division, PSA (Photographic Society of America); a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA), and Greater Lynn Photographic Association.

Shiv is proud to have been elected a Fellow of the Photographic Society of America in 2020, an Associate in 2013. He was elected an Honorary Member of the New England Camera Club Council in 2022, and a Master Member in 2008.

Lost in Fog – Photographing the Foggy Landscape

Fog is often referred to as the “Photographers Best Friend”, and is a wonderful element to include in landscape images. Fog has many moods that can add a lot of drama and emotion to images. Fog can be soft, delicate, and very ethereal looking. Or it can create very moody and mysterious looking images. Fog can simplify images by reducing distractions and softening backgrounds. It can also be used to isolate subjects, and create a sense of depth in compositions.

This program will cover the technical, creative and post-processing aspects of photographing foggy landscapes, including the following topics;

– What is fog, and what causes it to occur
– How to evaluate weather conditions to predict when fog is likely to occur.
– What are the different types of fog, and what places do they occur
– Simplifying compositions and backgrounds with fog.
– Using fog to create a sense of depth in compositions.
– Emphasizing light with fog (sunbeams and backlit fog).
– How to use fog to add mood, emotion and drama to your images.
– In-field shooting strategies to get better fog images
– Post-processing fog images using Lightroom

Ed McGuirk is a Massachusetts based landscape and nature photographer whose work concentrates on New England. He belongs to the Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers and the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists. His work has earned numerous honors, including the Lynn Salon’s Videtta Award, NECCC Nature Image of the Year, Highly Commended in the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year, and NPN’s Nature Photographer of the Year in 2021. A Canoe and Photographic Adventure in Canada’s Arctic
Jim Neale

In the summer of 2022, I was joined by colleagues from Japan, Singapore and the United States to spend 4 weeks canoeing from the headwaters of the Horton River to the Arctic Ocean. The 700 km journey took us through intimate watershed streams, vast tundra regions and 70 km’s of rapids surrounded by sheer canyons. The route was filled with spectacular scenery and intimate wildlife encounters. In this presentation I’ll be sharing some highlights and images of our adventure, my camera gear choices, waterproofing/packing suggestions and reflections on the photographic experience. I also look forward to discussions around the many questions and ideas that I hope will arise.
 
Bio:
Jim’s primary photographic interests are travel and sports of all kinds. He and his partner Donna travel about 6 months of the year, seeking out places and experiences that are unique and compelling. Sometimes he comes back with reasonable images but photography is not his primary reason for travel, nor do they ever do justice to the magic of the experiences.

Jim started his career leading groups in the wilderness for weeks at a time and has continued that practice throughout his adult life. Planning is currently underway to kayak the coast of Greenland for a month next summer. You preview some of Jim’s photography on his Flickr page.
